Minecraft has seen many updates over the years, with each one bringing its own set of surprises and enhancements. The latest game update, 1.21, is a landmark for both Java and Bedrock versions. Some might think that this update marks the 21st major revision, but it’s actually the 17th.
Java Minecraft evolved from alpha to beta before reaching its full release, resulting in three different 1.1 updates. Bedrock version, however, had a different journey. It started at version 0.1, which was followed by a milestone 0.15 update, and then moved to its full release at 1.0. Bedrock then skipped several updates, jumping directly to 1.2. This update became known as the Better Together update, which unified various platforms and introduced new game features.
The Better Together update was a significant one, bringing features like stained glass and banners to Bedrock. It also introduced crossplay compatibility, allowing players from different devices to join together. Parrots and music discs became a part of the game, which were previously unavailable. Before this update, music discs had to be downloaded separately to save app space on phones. Armor stands were introduced uniquely on Bedrock, offering players the chance to hold items in their hands.
Another notable feature was the Marketplace, which provided players on consoles with access to world packs, resource packs, and skin packs, albeit at a price. Server partners had to pay for their servers to be featured, making them accessible to Xbox users. The recipe book and new world options, including a bonus chest and starting map, were added to ensure parity with Java. Firework rockets and the rocket boost with elytra were also introduced.
Following this, update 1.4, known as the Update Aquatic, brought more changes. Water texture was improved, allowing items to float, which was a novel concept. Fish mobs, dolphins, and icebergs were added. The update also introduced coral reef blocks, ocean ruins, and buried treasure maps. The trident, along with its enchantments, was another major highlight of this update.
Each update brought something new and exciting to Minecraft, continuously shaping and expanding the game world. The unique paths Java and Bedrock took highlight Minecraft's creative and dynamic nature, offering players countless ways to explore and enjoy this blocky universe.
