How to Lube Keyboard Switches

Well-lubed switches can make all the difference whether you are a gaming enthusiast or love to spend long hours typing on your keyboard. Lubrication reduces switch friction and helps your fingers move more quickly when typing or gaming.

However, you must learn how to lube your keyboard switches the right way. So, let’s break down the basics of lubricating your keyboard switches.

Tools You Need to Lube Keyboard Switches

Before getting started, you will need a few tools and supplies. You will require the following:

  • A keyboard switch lubricant
  • Applicator tools such as a small brush or cotton swab
  • Soldering tools or keyboard switch puller
  • Tweezers

How to Apply Lubricant to Your Keyboard Switches

Unless you are a knowledgeable mechanical keyboard enthusiast, applying lubricant to your keyboard switches can seem daunting. However, it is easy with basic knowledge and the right supplies.

1. Remove the Switches From the Keyboard

Once you have gathered all your supplies, remove the switch from your keyboard by pulling apart the two halves of the housing. You can do this by using your finger or a soldering tool.

Press down and separate the top and bottom housings while simultaneously pulling them apart. Make sure not to force it. If it doesn’t come apart easily, something may be wrong internally, and you should contact a professional for help.

2. Apply Lube

Apply just two or three drops of lube to each switch component. Use a cotton swab or a small brush to lube the lower housing, spring, stem, and upper housing. To ensure proper lubrication coverage on each component, spread the drops evenly across its surface.

Be careful not to use too much lube. Too much lube can leak out from the inside of the switch and can spread to other components. The keys will then feel mushy when you press down.

3. Wipe Excess Lube and Put Back the Switch

After lubing each switch component, wipe off any excess lubricant with a clean cloth before putting it back together again. This step is important because leftover lube residue can attract dirt which may lead to problems down the road. Then line up both halves of the housing and snap them back together until they click into place securely.

4. Reinstall

Do the same and reinstall all switches into your keyboard, ensuring they sit in their designated holes before powering up again.

Proper application is essential for getting the best performance from your mechanical keyboard. When applying, focus on putting a thin layer on the stem of each switch. At the same time, avoid contact with any electronic portions of your keyboard.

Why Should You Lube Your Keyboard Switches

Lubing your keyboard switches is an easy and effective way to get the most out of your mechanical keyboard. Applying lubricant to the switch can improve the feel and sound of typing and gain more accurate and consistent keystrokes.

The better tactile response makes it easier to type quickly and accurately without fatigue. Moreover, an increase in stability reduces chatter when typing at high speeds. Additionally, lubing helps reduce wear on the contact points inside the switch, prolonging its lifespan with regular use.

The lubrication also helps give a smoother experience when pressing down on keys compared to dry switches. With lubed switches, there is less jarring noise offering a quieter experience for those around you. This means you can type in a much more pleasant environment with fewer distractions.

Keyboard Brands You Should Avoid Lubing

It is important to note that some keyboards are not intended for lubing. You should also prevent lubing laptop keyboard switches. Doing so can cause permanent damage and void your warranty.

One keyboard brand that you should avoid lubing is the Kailh BOX switches. Unlike other switch types, these switches have a housing design that you can not unclip for lubrication. This is because the BOX switches have a waterproof seal inside their housing. When you apply the lube, the seal becomes damaged and causes the switch to leak, potentially damaging your keyboard.

Conclusion

Lubricating your keyboard switches can make all the difference if you are an avid gamer or typist looking for improved performance out of their keyboard. With just a few simple steps, your keys can be smooth as butter in no time.

Gather all necessary supplies beforehand, including lubricant, an applicator tool such as a brush or cotton swab, and tweezers. With these tips in mind, you should be good to go on achieving smoother keyboard performance in no time.
